About Zeevonk
Zeevonk is an integrated energy project in the North Sea that combines offshore wind, floating solar, and green hydrogen production. By bringing these technologies together, it creates an advanced energy system that not only generates renewable electricity but also develops new ways to store and use that energy.
Vattenfall and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners are developing the project approximately 62 kilometres off the Dutch coast. The wind farm will have a total capacity of around 2 gigawatts, enough to power 2 million households, making a substantial contribution to the decarbonisation of the Dutch energy system.
At the core of the project is a large-scale offshore wind farm using turbines with a capacity of around 15 megawatts each. Within the same area, a floating solar park will also be installed. By combining wind and solar energy, the project makes more efficient use of available space at sea while creating a more stable and diversified renewable energy output.
Part of the electricity generated will be used to produce green hydrogen at the ‘Maasvlakte’ in the Port of Rotterdam. Hydrogen is already widely used in industries such as refining, chemicals, and fertiliser production. When produced using renewable electricity, it can significantly reduce CO₂ emissions in these sectors.
By integrating offshore wind, solar energy and hydrogen production, Zeevonk demonstrates how different technologies can work together to form a more flexible and resilient energy system.
The name Zeevonk refers to a natural phenomenon in the sea. Zeevonk is a type of plankton that produces bioluminescence: when the water is disturbed, these microscopic organisms emit a blue-green glow that becomes visible at night. This natural effect symbolises energy generated from the sea. Just as zeevonk makes the water light up, the project aims to generate new energy from wind, solar and water. The name highlights two key aspects of the project: the power of the sea and the transition to sustainable energy.
